Ancona, the elbow on the Adriatic
Founded by Greeks from Syracuse, who named it Ankón, the elbow, after the shape of its headland, Ancona is the only city on the Adriatic where you can watch the sun both rise and set over the sea. Its harbour has been its heart for two thousand years: Trajan's Arch, the Mole Vanvitelliana and the ferries to Croatia and Greece.
